Hey Molly - I think the spiral scene could absorb another intercut to finish the sequence - for example, he runs forwards as the black wall slides towards him (and us) and then as he leaves the scene, the black wall slides all the way forward to complete the total black screen, which leads onto the the stairs sequence.
In terms of pace, I think you should replace that first intercut with a top view of him running down the corridor with the wall closing in quickly behind him.
Second intercut (which finishes spiral sequence) - front view (like you've already done), but with the back wall rushing to fill all the whiteness, thus giving you the total black transition before the stairs scene.
Can you make him react to the disappear pillars - his head snapping left and right etc. as they fall - and before he does? Just a bit of reaction from him would bring him further to life.
No - that's just 2 intercuts - with the new proposed top view replacing the one you've already inserted, and a second new intercut with him running towards the camera, with the black wall rushing up behind him to create the black screen (basically what you've already done in the original intercut you included in this scene).
