Research into Japanese Calligraphy...
As I'm getting ready to design my characters I thought it would be worth looking into Japanese calligraphy and the shapes and styles used in it. I found a book called The Art of Zen by Stephen Addiss and it's got some really nice examples of calligraphy in it, so below are the images I found most useful:
