Here I followed the rim light tutorial and this is how he ended up:
The rim light is better but there now feels like the face/head is too dark. Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

okay - I know nothing about how this stuff is achieved, but it feels like you need a much more exaggerated rim light effect - so that Alistair literally pops off the background.
