Work Experience: The What and the When.

For the last 5 weeks I've been lucky enough to be given work experience with the Audio Visual company called Butch Auntie.

This company creates bespoke visual projections for anything from a private party up to huge public events.  They create VJ (Visual Jockey) sets for music artists that are then projected to match their set-list, as well as mapping projections to fit the grandest to the smallest buildings.

It's been the most enlightening experience as well as one of the scariest.  For the first 4 weeks I was tasked with creating flowing cloth and sparkling fireworks, which was great fun and I managed to get them done to a nice standard too.

The final week has been intense but for privacy reasons I can't discuss what I was up to, except that I used past skills as well as learning a lot of new ones.

I've learnt so much about dynamics in Maya and I've had a great first hand account of a part of the industry I may never have considered before.  It was really busy and intense but I learnt a lot and the people we've worked with have been fantastic. Super helpful and really welcoming, which is great when you're as anxious as I am.

There's still a day or so to go, but all I can say is hopefully there'll be no more last minute hiccups and it's been a really amazing experience, that I was very fortunate to be given.

BA Exp. Week 3: Sparkling Cloth Everywhere...

Newest flapping cloth now with slightly better glitter:

Glittering cloth travelling along a curve:

I quite like how the cloth along a curve looks but it seems to have a life of it's own which may or may not be what I'm after.

BA Exp. Week 3: Spinning Cloth *Updated*...

This time it remains straight and I made it spin in AE:

Below is my attempt at adding glittering particles:

It's almost there but I need to introduce more white particles so there's more of an obvious bright spark to sell it as glitter.

BA Exp. Week 3: More Cloth Tests...

Illness has slowed me down the last few days but I've got some pretty nice experiments done:

These didn't loop well so it's quite jerky and it's got some ugly pulls but it's definitely going to lead on to some really interesting stuff.

BA Exp. Week 2: VJ Pack Ideas...

I like the theme of moving and growing flowers for my VJ pack so I thought I'd have a go at playing with one of the little flowers from a previous experiment:

It's worked quite nicely, although the animation needs a lot of smoothing out. More of the same I think, and hopefully I should end up with something quite nice! :D

BA Exp. Week 2: More Fabulous Fireworks...

I've taken the first fireworks I made and combined them with curve shapes to make them more themed. Here's what I have so far:

Pretty cool! I'll play around with different shapes too, as I think the large flared trousers might not be quite right despite them being part of the project theme.

Good stuff though! :)

BA Work Exp. Week 2: Cloth Experiments...

I finally got it to render properly! Here's how my experiments with ncloth look:

Original render -

Experiments in After Effects:

I want to make a torn version of the cloth next so it moves even better in the wind, but this is very promising.

Next is more fireworks with new shapes and sizes! :D

BA Exp. Week 2: Playing with Satin...

I've been playing around with ncloth and the rendering and tests have taken a lot longer than I thought they would. Plus my software's being a bugger, but it'll be fine. It's jerky as I renderred it in two lots, and it still isn't all of it, but here's what I have so far:

I really like the satin look the fabric has and I'm relaly looking forward to playing around with the colours and gettnig the whole 200 frames rendered tonight.  Exciting times though! :D
