Phil, Essay Help Please!

I'm a little stuck about what to choose for my essay, the only thing I've sort of decided on is Hellboy 2.  I could talk about Guillermo del Toro's style when it comes to his films and the recurring visual themes that he uses, as well as all the background workers that create the costumes and sets.  I've got the 'art of the film' book so that should help a lot but I'm not sure if that would be a good one to choose or if someone else may have already chosen to do it?

Feedback will be much appreciated! :D

  1. Hey Molly - firstly, it makes not a scrap of difference if someone else is looking at the same essay subject as you. Don't worry about it. Secondly, you need to box a little clever when it comes to choosing a viable subject for this essay; essentially, you need to choose something about which there is a great to say and a great deal written about it. In this sense, I suggest you use the availability of evidence to gauge whether or not choosing del Toro is a cunning enough plan. What you should be doing is reading widely about del Toro in terms of his production design and visual concept - both in his own words and in the opinion of others; gather this together in the form of quotes (with all the bibliographic stuff included for referencing purposes) and use a blog post in order to do this (i.e. create a post, and then, envelope like, just keep stuffing it with useful research material - it just means everything you need to write your assignment is all in one place when the time comes to start it). You will soon discover if del Toro is a good choice, because, if so, you'll have loads of commentary from reputable sources - and nothing to worry about; if you come up with nothing, you'll know to make an alternative choice...
